July Update - New Home
An update on my project in Goiana. I and our maker space has a new home!
I’ve been living in the Goiana area for several months now. I spent a couple of months at the land we hope to build into an activity center in the community of Ubu Engenho. It is about 20 minutes from Goiana. I am a few contacts in the community, and learned more about what life there is like. Still working on some idea for what can be done with that land.

Images of the land we hope to build an activity center,
The open field, currently have some corn growing that will be harvested and sold at the market soon.
The driveway through the land going past the fruit trees. There are several fruits including jack fruit, mango, coconut, and banana trees.
The main road through town. There are a few small stores, a school and medical center in town.
There is a large group of monkeys in the area. One stopped by for a visit on its way back from the fruit tree grove.
The tiny house I lived in while I was there. Taken from near the main house.
Children’s and Youth Ministries
Everyone here has been pretty busy planning a children’s retreat. You can follow their Instagram @Pequeninos_matanorte.
Here is a flyer Ricardo wrote to share with you some information about the retreat.
Goiana Maker Space Project
A few weeks ago, I moved into a house in Goiana, that we are using to launch a marker and co-working space.
Ricardo has started to work with me to learn technology. He also has a strong desire for missional living, so he is very interested learning more about how I live. He is learning programming in school, and I am helping him learn how to develop an electronic drum. We are starting with a web application, so he can play several drums from either a keyboard a set of smart phones. I like to start with a project the student is interested in. I give them the basic structure and some website to research, giving guidance and assistance as needed.
Automated Solar Dryer System
To introduce some of the concepts behind IoT and smart systems, we will be working on a automated awning over the clothes line in my backyard. We have entered the rainy season which means my solar/wind powered clothes dryer (i.e. clothesline) comes with a built in automated rinse bug. (Tech support insists its not really an issue as it only happens when it rains.)
A good entry level smart technology project is an automated cover that opens when it starts to rain. I’ll have Ricardo work on a design we can build as a demonstration and education project.
Thank you so much for your support!
During the month of July I am building a fund for the youth ministries here in Goiana. New subscriptions for July will go into this fund. You can also contribute through my paypal link below.
I go where God leads me. Currently that is serving the poor in Brazil. I have expertise in technology, and am researching ways to improve lives using technology. Your paid subscriptions help support these projects.
